PROFILES: The US Ryder Cup team

Dustin Johnson

Form

Johnson has had a stellar season, winning three times this season, including the US Open. He was the top qualifier for the team.

Ryder Cup Record

Johnson made his debut in 2010, and will be playing in his third Ryder Cup this week. An injury kept him out of the team for Gleneagles two years ago. He was won four of his seven matches.

What media are saying

The US Open champion is seen as America's trump card this week. If he plays well, America should win.

Jordan Spieth

Form

Having failed to live up to the hype of 2015, Spieth still won twice this year, but came up empty-handed in the majors. Both of his wins came in the first half of the year.

Ryder Cup Record

Before his historic 2015, Spieth made his Ryder Cup debut at Gleneagles in 2014. He formed a brilliant partnership with Patrick Reed remaining unbeaten in their three matches.

What media are saying

After his 2014 rookie performance, Spieth is seen as a leader for the team, on and off the course. The two-time major winner will play a big part this weekend.

Phil Mickelson

Form

Mickelson failed to win in 2016, but has had six top-ten finishes, including a second-placed finish at The Open. The performance at Royal Troon kickstarted an impressive few months for the veteran.

Ryder Cup Record

Mickelson has played in every Ryder Cup since 1997 and will be making his record-equalling 11th appearance this week. Despite the experience, he has won less matches, than he lost. His record is 16-19-6

What media are saying

The veteran is the father of the team, and will be used to guide some of the younger players in the team. His off-course role will be critical.

Patrick Reed

Form

Reed finished third in the FedEx Cup, and once this season on Tour, winning The Barclays in August. He has had 11 top-ten finishes this season.

Ryder Cup Record

Reed formed a surprisingly effective partnership with Jordan Spieth on his debut in 2014. He has still to lose a match winning 3.5 points out of a possible four in Scotland.

What media are saying

After the success of his pairing with Spieth in 2014, the duo are expected to work together again at Hazeltine, and could be America's best two-man team.

Jimmy Walker

Form

Walker’s season will be defined by winning the US PGA Championship in July. The win was his only one of the year. He is in good form having a third place finish earlier this month at the Deutsche Bank Championship

Ryder Cup Record

Walker made his debut in 2014, and played with Rickie Fowler. The duo proved to be one of America’s best losing only one of their four matches matches together. He defeated Lee Westwood in the Sunday Singles.

What media are saying

The quiet man of the team, is full of confidence after his major win. He should join forces once more with Rickie Fowler.

Brooks Koepka

Form

The rookie didn’t win in 2016, but qualified with consistent top-ten finishes throughout the year. He has two second-place finishes in May and June.

Ryder Cup Record

Koepka was the only rookie to qualify for the team automatically.

What media are saying

A new-breed of American golfer, Koepka has the confidence and skill that could see him flourish in Minnesota. He wont play a lot, but will be effective when he does.

Brandt Snedeker

Form

A win at Torrey Pines in January catapulted Snedeker into the Ryder Cup reckoning. Three other top-three finishes this year helped him back into the team for a second time.

Ryder Cup Record

Snedeker played in 2012, and was used in both foursomes matches with Jim Furyk. They won one of their two matches. He also lost to Paul Lawrie in the Singles.

What media are saying

One of the steadiest players on the team, Snedeker's putting will be crucial over the three days. He should be used primarily as a foursomes player.

Zach Johnson

Form

The last of the automatic qualifiers, Johnson didnt have a top-three all year, but five top-tens on the PGA Tour, helped him qualify. A steady player, he has only missed three cuts all year.

Ryder Cup Record

The two-time Major winner is the second most experienced player in the team. He made his debut in 2006, and will play in his fifth Ryder Cup this week. Johnson has won and lost six of his fourteen matches.

What media are saying

A patriotic American, Johnson's game should improve with a boisterous home crowd. An elder-statesmen of the team, Johnson will lead from the front.

JB Holmes

Form

Unlucky to miss out on an automatic spot, Holmes’ third placed finish at The Open was crucial to his season. The Kentucky native also had five other top-tens, including one at the BMW Championship earlier this month.

Ryder Cup Record

Holmes returns to the team for the first time since he made his debut in 2008. At Valhalla, Holmes was a key part of the team, as he went unbeaten in his three matches.

What media are saying

He could be a wildcard in America's potential success. An inspiration in 2008, Holmes' passion may inspire the team this week.

Rickie Fowler

Form

It took until the last week of March, for Fowler to finish outside the top-six and that’s what helped him earn a wildcard.

Ryder Cup Record

Fowler has played in two previous Ryder Cups, but this will be his first on home soil. Having played at Celtic Manor and Gleneagles, Fowler has yet to win in his eight matches, but has halved five of those.

What media are saying

A two-time Ryder Cup veteran, Fowler will thrive on front of the home crowd. At the Olympics, he showed how much playing for America means to him. Expect more of that this week.

Matt Kuchar

Form

An Olympic bronze medalist, Kuchar has had ten top-ten finishes this year, but has failed to win a tournament.

Ryder Cup Record

Ever-present in the team since 2010, Kuchar has yet to be on a winning team, but has performed well is testing circumstances, winning four of his 11 matches.

What media are saying

Such is his understated manner, Kuchar will be one of the most dependable players on the team. With a good matchplay record, Kuch is desperate for his first win.

Ryan Moore

Form

Moore’s play-off loss to Rory McIlroy last week at the Tour Championship earned him the final spot on Davis Love’s team. Apart from that tied-second place finish, Moore also won in August at the John Deere Classic.

Ryder Cup Record

Moore is one of only two players in the American team to never play in the Ryder Cup. He was only added to the team on Sunday.

What media are saying

The deserving pick for the final wildcard, after his performances at the Tour Championship. Moore could be one of the unsung heroes of the week.
