Over the last week, the rumour mill has been putting Shane Long and Liverpool into the same sentence.

But would the Southampton striker be a good fit for Liverpool - and would it be a wise for the Ireland international?

Ex-Boys in Green defender Paddy Mulligan is not optimistic that a transfer from England's south coast to Merseyside is the way to go.

"It would be a great move for Shane Long but not a good fit for Liverpool I don't think," said Paddy on the Newstalk Rewind.

"I don't think it will happen. But Liverpool are a little bit desperate so if they brought Balotelli, they could bring Shane Long. He's a very honest player but he is not a proven goalscorer and that's what Liverpool require at this moment in time."

You can listen to more of Paddy's assessment on Long's possible Anfield future as well as analysis of Liverpool v Manchester United and Stoke v Arsenal on the Rewind podcast:
