The relationship between a golfer and caddy is unique.
While the golfer earns the money and takes the plaudits, the caddy acts as a guide, a confidante and even an amateur psychologist on the golf course.
Most caddies get paid, on the back of how successful their golfer is. The more money the player earns, the richer the caddy becomes. A traditional 5%/7%/10% formula is used by many players on tour. Those rates are for making the cut/top ten finish/winning.
While Rory McIlroy is now in such a comfortable financial position, that a million dollars entering his bank account may not be immediately noticed, the same cannot be said for his caddy JP Fitzgerald.
The Hollywood native won the FedEx Cup and Tour Championship in September, winning more than $11million in the process. This week, McIlroy is competing in China at the HSBC Champions, when he revealed it was Fitzgerald who told him about the money entering the account, by text message.
"I think his words were, 'A tsunami just hit my bank account, so thank you very much.'"
"So the total was $1.05 million," McIlroy continued. "I think he was quite happy."
Fitzgerald has been on the bag for all four of his major wins, and his other 18 professional triumphs. McIlroy's on-course earnings is well over €20million, and Fitzgerald has seen a chunk of that.
Despite his own wealth, a million dollars still means a lot to the Dubliner. Nice work if you can get it.
