Aaron Hernandez's murder conviction is overturned

Former New England Patriots tight-end Aaron Hernandez has had his murder conviction overturned.

Hernandez was convicted of the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2015. Lloyd was murdered in June 2013. At the time he was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee.

Last month, Hernandez was found dead in his police cell. Day's earlier, he was found not guilty of a double murder of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu. The two men were killed outside a Boston nightclub in 2012.

Since Hernandez's death, his legal team have tried to have his conviction overturned, due to a rule in the state of Massachusetts.

Under state law, any conviction can be overturned if the accused dies before the appeals process is completed. Hernandez was in the middle of an appeal over his 2015 conviction.

Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh vacated Hernandez's conviction earlier this week, just under three weeks after his death in prison.

The vacation of Hernandez's conviction could allow is fiancee and daughter collect an insurance pay-out on the back of his death, from his time in the NFL.

"In our book, he's guilty and he's going to always be guilty," Lloyd's mother Ursula Ward told Reuters. "No one wins today. But I won because I have God on my side and with God all things are possible."
