Adam Scott will not be available for selection for the Olympic Games in Rio this summer.

The Australian golfer confirmed today in a statement that he would skip the event in order to focus on a busy schedule on the PGA Tour.

“My decision has been taken as a result of an extremely busy playing schedule around the time of the Olympics and other commitments, both personal and professional,” he said.

“I have informed the Australian team captain and relevant authorities, who are understanding of my position and I wish the Australian Olympic team the very best of luck in Rio.”

Scott is ranked 7th in the world and would be included in those who qualify automatically for the games, as the world's top 15 golfers are guaranteed a spot in the event.

"Whether I win an Olympic medal or not is not going to define my career or change whether I've fulfilled my career,"  he said last year.
