Adidas apologise for insensitive email following the Boston Marathon

Sports clothing and equipment giant Adidas has been forced to apologise after inadvertently sending out an insensitive email at the conclusion of the Boston Marathon on Monday.

The 2013 race was the subject of a terrorist attack where three people lost their lives and hundreds others were injured after two devices detonated near the finish line.

The annual race is now partially run in memory of the victims of that attack. However, Adidas sent an email after this year's race which read: "Congrats, you survived the Boston Marathon" which has caused outrage in the city and farther afield.

A statement released to the Boston Globe read: "We are incredibly sorry. Clearly, there was no thought given to the insensitive e-mail subject line we sent Tuesday.

"The Boston Marathon is one of the most inspirational sporting events in the world. Every year we’re reminded of the hope and resiliency of the running community at this event."

This year was the 121st edition of the annual event.
