Newcastle legends have turned out to remember former goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek who died last month at the age of 47 after suffering cardiac arrest.

A memorial service has been held at the Parish Church of St Andrew, which is near Newcastle's home ground, St James' Park.

It was attended by many of Srnicek's former team-mates including Alan Shearer and Ireland goalkeeping great Shay Given.

"Abide With Me" was sung, which included an extra verse in tribute to Srnicek, including the line "Pavel is a Geordie evermore".

Former club captain Shearer, who played with Srnicek between 1996 and 1998 was among those present and he paid tribute.

"The man, he was an incredible professional. Very honest, very open, very humble, very hard-working and got on with everyone. That's why this area loved him," said the former England captain.
