Allergic reaction causes Team Europe's Thomas Pieters to withdraw from KLM Open

Europe Ryder Cup rookie Thomas Pieters has withdrawn from the KLM Open golf after an allergic reaction to a bee sting.

The Belgian was meant to be playing for the first time since securing one of Darren Clarke's captain's picks for the match with America.

Pieters was last year's champion in the Netherlands.

Europe vice-captain Padraig Harrington was particularly excited by Pieters' progression when he spoke to Off The Ball after the Belgian's inclusion.

"You've got to say Thomas Pieters forced his way into the team. He's potentially a world No 1 player. This is a big star for the future," he told Joe Molloy.

"The rest of the team are clamouring to partner up in foursomes and four-ball. Put it like that. Everybody wants to play with Thomas Pieters. This is a guy who's going to win points for other guys."
