Amir Khan sets his sights on Floyd Mayweather after New York win

Amir Khan wants to be the next boxer to fight Floyd Mayweather, after a unanimous points victory against American Chris Algieri overnight.

Over 7,000 fans turned out at the Barclays Centre in New York to watch the Welterweight bout and see Khan take his overall record to 31-3.

The Briton has now won five consecutive bouts after scoring 117-111, 117-111 and 115-113 on the three judges’ scorecards and the 28 year-old now believes he’s the appropriate next challenge for Mayweather.

"Amir Khan wants to fight Floyd Mayweather," he said in the ring after victory last night.

"I want that next. I'm number one World Boxing Council [challenger]. He's the champion. So let's make it happen."

38 year-old Mayweather is coming off the back of the most lucrative fight in history after beating Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas earlier this month and is set to retire after a final bout in September.

The American has already turned down a challenge from Khan, when he decided to go into the ring with Argentina’s Marcos Maidana last year instead.
