Andy Lee in line to fight Gennady "GGG" Golovkin

Ireland's Andy Lee is line for a fight with Gennady "GGG" Golovkin as he prepares to make his ring return after over a year out of action.

It was announced during the week that he will face KeAndrae Leatherwood in Madison Square Garden, New York on March 18th on the under-card for Gennady Golovkin's world title fight with Danny Jacobs.

Speaking at the announcement to ESPN, Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler spoke of his respect for the Irishman saying: "We have a lot of respect for Andy because he was one of the guys who agreed to fight Gennady but it didn't happen because Gennady's father passed away but we have a good relationship with Andy and I thought it made a lot of sense to have him on the card.

"A future fight between Gennady and Andy is always something to consider. Out of respect for Andy agreeing to fight Gennady back then, when nobody would fight him, it made sense to have him on the show, especially on St. Patrick's Day weekend.

"He's no stranger to the New York fans and the Irish fans. He's in a very competitive fight for his first fight back," he added.

Lee and "GGG" met in the 2003 amateur World championships with the Kazakh winning a decision on his way to being crowned champion.

Golovkin has gone to cement his position as one of the most feared boxers on the planet and holds a remarkable unbeaten record of 36-0 with 33 wins by way of knock-out. He also has a win over Ireland's Matthew Macklin back in 2013.

He is currently the WBC, IBF and IBO world champion and is ranked number four in "The Ring Magazine's" pound-for-pound list.
