Andy Murray crashes out of Australian Open

Andy Murray is out of the Australian open in the Round of 16 as he lost to Germany's Mischa Zverev.

Murray, the world number one, was favourite to win the tournament, his first Australian Open, and expected to progress past the 50th ranked Zverev without much difficulty at the Rod Laver arena today.

However, the German was able to dig deep and managed to defeat Murray 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Speaking afterwards, Zverev said: "I just served and volleyed my way through it. There were a few points where I don't know how I pulled it off but somehow I made it."

Zverev's brother Sascha watched on from the crowd, having pushed Rafael Nadal to five sets the day before, and was overjoyed to see the performance of his sibling against the world's top player.

Murray stated that he was upset with his performance on the day, saying: "Right now I'm more disappointed for myself. It's the earliest I've lost here for, I don't know, a long time.

"I've had tough losses in my career in the past," he added, "I've come back from them. I'm sure I'll come back okay from it.

Zverev will now face either Roger Federer or Kei Nishikori, who also meet in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Murray is not the first high profile name to be knocked out of the tournament at an early stage after reigning champion Novak Djokovic suffered a similarly shock defeat to Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin earlier this week
