Andy Murray crowned ITF world champion for 2016

Andy Murray was today unveiled as the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) world champion for 2016, with Angelique Kerber collecting the women's gong.

Murray enjoyed a memorable 2016 after usurping Novak Djokovic as world number one, following victories at Wimbledon, the Olympic Games and the ATP Tour Finals.

"It means a lot to me to be named ITF world champion," he said. "I have had such a memorable year, winning again at Wimbledon, retaining my Olympic title, and clinching the year-end No 1 ranking in the last match of the season.

"It is particularly special with my brother Jamie also becoming world champion."

Jamie Murray picked up the doubles award with partner Bruno Soares after clinching the year-ending number one team ranking in the last event of 2016 at the ATP World Tour Finals.

Kerber's achievements this year were equally as impressive. The German shocked the tennis community by beating Serena Williams in the final of the Australian Open in January.

She then claimed victory in the US Open and even took home the silver medal in the Olympic Games.

"I'm truly honoured to be named ITF World Champion and to line up with all these past champions," she said.

"This year was by far the best of my career with so many unforgettable experiences and emotions. I am grateful for the recognition and I'm looking forward to the upcoming challenges."
