Andy Murray defeats Novak Djokovic in the ATP final to remain the world number one

Andy Murray finishes 2016 as the world number one ranked tennis player after defeating his rival Novak Djokovic in the ATP World Tour final.

The win marks a career-best of 24 successive wins for 29-year-old Murray who previously took the world number one ranking at the Paris Masters at the beginning of the month.

Djokovic held the number one ranking for 122 weeks and completed his career Grand Slam by beating Murray in the French Open final in June.

But Murray landed a major scalp by winning the Wimbledon and built on that momentum for the remainder of the year. Today's victory brings Djokovic's four consecutive tournament wins to an end and puts a halt on his attempts to equal Roger Federer's record of six titles.
