Andy Murray suffers shock defeat at Indian Wells Masters

Andy Murray's gone down to a shock defeat to Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil at the Indian Wells Masters tennis.

The world number one was beaten in straight sets (6-4, 7-6) in the second round by the 129 ranked player in the world.

"Disappointing," Murray said. "I had opportunities in the first set when I was up. I was there up 3-1 and 4-2, so I would have liked to have done better there. I didn't serve well enough tonight.

"He definitely started to play better in the second set. He was aggressive and came to the net, playing some great reflex volleys at important moments. Overall, I thought he deserved to win."

Pospisil, meanwhile, paid tribute to the quality of his opponent and labelled the victory the biggest of his career.

"It's an amazing feeling," said the 26-year-old. "It happened so quick. I'm on the comeback trail after a tough year last year for a lot of different reasons.

"The last couple of months I've really found my hunger and motivation to get back on the court to train hard again. I've been very pleased with that more than anything else.

"I felt like a big result was coming over the last couple of weeks and months because I believe in my abilities. But I had to put the pieces together again and to beat the number one player in the world is just incredible. It's the biggest win of my career."

Murray entered the competition in fine form after winning the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, comfortably beating Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).
