Newcastle United's second relegation in eight years was confirmed on Wednesday night after Sunderland has a 3-0 win at home to Everton.
The club were the heaviest spenders in January, as they tried to survive to play in a seventh successive Premier League season next year. Both Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend were signed to lucrative deal and both look set to stay at the club next season despite their heavy wages.
Newcastle fans have been disillusioned in recent years with the direction the club is taking under owner Mike Ashley. The businessman has overseen his club be relegated twice since taking charge in 2007.
One Newcastle fan, spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live on Wednesday after their relegation was confirmed and he is unsure if the team will automatically bounce back like they did in 2010.
"The players this season have been an absolute disgrace", Newcastle fan Dan claimed. "I've been to games this season. I've seen players running around, having five or six touches or the ball and we're wondering why we're in the bottom three? No effort. No desire. No want. No commitment. No want."
Dan said the Steve McClaren's tactics "were totally inept", but he laid the blame on the players' performances throughout the season. "Players have got to stand up and be counted. They are the ones who cross the line on the pitch on a Saturday afternoon."
"The last time we went down, we had a core of players that stayed like (Kevin) Nolan and (Joey) Barton and that's what got us straight back up the next season. I cant't see that happening next season."
The Newcastle supporter is hopeful that Rafa Benitez will stay at the club. The ex-Real Radrid manager joined earlier this year but has a get-out clause in the case of relegation. "If we keep Benitez we might have a chance, but if Benitez goes the players will be off... We might get the play-offs if we're lucky."
Newcastle's last Premier League game of the season is this Sunday at home to Tottenham.
