The fifth-place finish was not enough to overhaul the Netherlands' Marit Bouwmeester, but Murphy's performance helped her overtake Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom.
Murphy's medal is the first Ireland have won in sailing since David Wilkins and James Wilkinson won a silver in Moscow in 1980.
The silver medal, has come after four years of waiting, when Murphy missed out narrowly missed out on a medal in London in 2012.
