Anthony Foley gives positive update on Keith Earls' injury

Munster head coach Anthony Foley gave a positive update on Keith Earls' injury that saw him stretchered off against Leinster in Thomond Park on Sunday night.

There was huge concern for Earls when he failed to get up after offloading the ball in the first half, and the medical team sprinted on to check on his condition.

Although he was able to raise his arm and give a thumbs up to the crowd, he was in a stretcher with his head and neck secured, and it did not look good for the Ireland international.

Speaking after the match, Foley revealed that Earls had been to the hospital to get a check up already, and had returned to the stadium without any concerns.

"I just spoke to Keith inside there he's just back from the hospital and walking around in there so that's good. After he offloaded the ball, he fell and connected I think with a leg and a had a bit of a shock through the body. That was looked after".

He emphasised that it was neck pain rather than a head injury, and given that Earls had already having suffered two concussions in recent months, that was an important distinction to make.

"It was a neck pain issue. When he fell to the ground and his head hit the back of someone's ankle, he felt a pain in his chest and his back, he's been released from hospital with no concerns".

That wasn't the end of the fitness concerns for Foley however, as he added that James Cronin was on crutches in the dressing room with an ankle injury, and that Conor Murray had failed a fitness test before the match.

Foley stated that the hip injury sustained against Leicester was the reason that Murray was unable to make the game on Sunday, but stopped short of offering a timeline for his return, saying only that they would "have to see what way he turns up tomorrow".
