Anthony Martial dedicates European Golden Boy award to Manchester United fans

Anthony Martial has been awarded Tuttosport's Golden Boy award, which honours Europe's best young talent over a calender year.

Martial joins an illustrious list of players previously deemed Europe's best young player such as Rafael van der Vaart, Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Cesc Fàbregas, Sergio Agüero, Anderson, Alexandre Pato, Mario Balotelli, Mario Götze, Isco, Paul Pogba and Raheem Sterling.

The United forward signed from AS Monaco for a monumental fee as the summer transfer window dwindled down and Louis van Gaal realised he had left himself thin in attack for the upcoming season. Martial burst on the scene with a goal against Liverpool on his debut and two against Southampton in the game after that but has failed to find the back of the net in the league since.

He dedicated the award to United's fans saying, "I'd like to dedicate it to our fans, they are incredible, formidable, they travel from anywhere to be near us and no matter where in England or overseas we can find ourselves because we can always hear them singing and supporting us."

Martial also spoke about comparisons with Thierry Henry that are not going away, "It 's an honour to be compared to the great Thierry Henry, but I have a duty to remain down to earth. I want to focus on my game and to keep growing as a player. Van Gaal told me since last summer to work hard and that's what I'm doing."

"As for the price that was paid by United, the comments I hear about it don't bother me too much. If anything, it was a heavy load to bear for my family, they had a little fear with everything that was written in the newspapers and what has been said. I was just in a hurry to move to Manchester and play football."

Manchester United will be hoping he is more Agüero than Anderson when all is said and done.
