Are the NBA getting ready to allow sponsors on jerseys?

Most major league in America (with the exception of MLS) do not allow teams carry sponsors on their jerseys. That may be about to change.

Ahead of this weekend's NBA All-Star game, Kia will advertise on the jerseys for the 2016 and 2017 games but that may be about to change soon.

According to ESPN, one sponsor may be allowed on NBA team jerseys as early as 2017. They have reported that all league owners will meet on Sunday in Toronto before the All-Star game with a view to allowing sponsors on-court.

If the motion was passed, teams would only be able to keep 50% of jersey sponsorship earnings with the rest going into a NBA fund. Deals would only be allowed for a maximum of three years.

Sponsors are allowed on WNBA jerseys since 2009, but the NBA have failed to cave into economic pressures. NFL teams have sponsors on training jerseys but they still remain prohibited to advertise on jerseys during games.
