Armagh footballers play match in jeans as bizarre protest

An Armagh SFC game descended into farce last night as Dromintee fielded three players wearing jeans in their game against Crossmaglen.

The situation arose after Dromintee were left short of players due to a wedding that many of the side were attending. The club asked the Armagh county board to rearrange the fixture but the request was denied, forcing Dormintee to field several older players, not from their regular panel. In protest the Dromintee footballers responded by fielding three players wearing jeans.

The game ended 1-08 to 0-00 in favour of the shorts wearing Crossmaglen. Although the match carried on for the full 60 minutes, Crossmaglen scored 1-08 in the opening eight minutes before the two teams retreated to their respective halves and spent the remainder of the game training.

At one point during the game a Dromintee player kicked the ball over the sideline, leading the referee to ask a Crossmaglen player to restart the game before returning to his own half to continue training with his side.

The BBC reports that Dromintee were warned a failure to fulfil the fixture could lead to a 48 week ban for the club, including at underage. The club elected to field the cobbled together side to prevent that eventuality.
