Arsenal confirm their first high-profile signing of the summer

Arsenal have confirmed their first signing of the summer, with Granit Xhaka joining the club on a "long-term contract".

Xhaka, a Swiss international, was Borussia Monchengladbach's captain last season as the team finished fourth in the Bundesliga. The team also qualified for the Champions League.

The 23-year-old joins Arsenal for an undisclosed fee and is Arsene Wenger's first signing of an outfield player in the summer since Danny Welbeck joined in September 2014.

A product of the Basel academy, Xhaka played for his local team, before joining Monchengladbach in 2012. In Germany, he was part of the team that finished third in the the 2014/15 season.

"I’m very proud to be joining Arsenal", he told the club's website. "I cannot wait to move to London, represent this special club and play in the Premier League. I will give everything to help Arsenal win trophies and make the fans happy."

Xhaka has played 41 times for his national team and will join up with Arsenal after Euro 2016.
