Arsene Wenger bats away talk of "restructure" within Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger dismissed any talk that there will be a restructure within the club and said he was not prepared to discuss reports that a director of football will be appointed this summer.

Arsenal face a battle for the top four against Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United, with his side sitting sixth in the table.

The Gunners picked up a 2-0 victory over United last Sunday, but Jose Mourinho's side look set to pursue a Champions League spot by winning the Europa League.

Failure to finish inside the top four would be the first time Arsenal have not made the Champions League during Wenger's 20-year stewardship.

The Frenchman faces increased pressure from fans to step down as manager this summer and he has still yet to shed any light on his future at the club.

Speaking on Tuesday morning, the 67-year-old ruled out the idea of working with a director of football.

"I'm not prepared to talk about that," he told reporters. "I am manager of Arsenal football club and as long as I'm manager of Arsenal football club, I will decide what happens on the technical front.

"That's it."

Wenger went on to say that he "never could understand" what the role meant.

"Director of football, I don't know what it means. Is it someone who stands on the road and directs play right and left?"

Arsenal face Southampton tomorrow evening at the Emirates Stadium, knowing a win could take them above Manchester United in fifth.
