Alan Matthews has resigned as manager of Athlone Town and several players are expected to follow as his position became "untenable" at the club.

The club were disciplined recently by the FAI for not fulfilling a fixture against Waterford Town at the beginning of the month. The FAI were informed on the afternoon that the game was meant to take place that they did not have enough players to play the game, which resulted in the hefty fine and a review being commissioned.

An independent committee was set up by the FAI to look into why this happened and Matthews had believed this would help matters at the club but the ex-Shelbourne manager was forced to leave with several players expected to follow suit in the coming days.
