Ballymena boxer Steven Donnelly qualifies for Rio 2016

Ireland's boxing team for the Rio Olympic Games has increased this morning to four boxers.

Welterweight Steven Donnelly was confirmed this morning as having booked a place to Rio next year. The Ballymena native qualified for the Games after his performances in World Series of Boxing last year.

Donnelly won the 2014 National Championships and has won two bronze medals for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games. It will be his first Olympic Games.

Pat Ryan and Fergal Carruth, President and CEO of the IABA, confirmed this morning that they had been notified by the Olympic Council of Ireland that Donnelly has earned his place in Brazil next year.

Pat Ryan said: “We are absolutely delighted for Steven and for his club. Steven performed magnificently last season and he won his place on merit. Congratulations to him and all involved.”

Fergal Carruth said: “We have received confirmation that Steven has been offered a quota place for the Olympic Games in Rio. This is fantastic news for our sport and congratulations to Steven and his club.”

Donnelly joins World Champion Michael Conlan, Joe Ward and Paddy Barnes in already having qualified for the event.
