Bastian Schweinsteiger returns to first team training with Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has returned to first team training this afternoon, after being frozen out by manager Jose Mourinho at the start of the campaign.

The German World Cup winner has struggled to maintain his fitness since arriving at Manchester United last summer from Bayern Munich.

The 31-year-old was expected to add reinforcement in central midfield, with former United boss Louis van Gaal favouring experience over the development of younger players like Ander Herrera who has flourished under Mourinho.

Schweinsteiger was omitted from the Manchester United team photo taken last week, the latest indication that the Portuguese manager had no room for him in his plans.

However, with Paul Pogba's underwhelming start to the season upon his return to United, it appears Mourinho has brought the German back into the fold.

"MUFC will be my last club in Europe," Schweinsteiger said in a statement in August. "I respect other clubs, but Manchester United was the only one which could make me leave Bayern Munich. I will be ready, if the team needs me.

"This is all I can say about my current situation. I want to thank the fans for their amazing support over the recent weeks."

Of the decision to drop him in the first place Mourinho said: "I normally like to work with 20 players plus the three goalkeepers which is what I do for 15 years.

"Because we have so many players but at the same time because we have so many competitions and especially the Europa League competition and I have to make my decisions. Simple!"
