Billy Walsh expects to be drawn against Irish boxers in Rio de Janeiro

Billy Walsh has revealed that it's "Murphy's Law", that one of his American boxers will end up fighting an Irish opponent at the Olympic Games.

Walsh left the High Performance Unit last year to take up a new position in Colorado with USA Boxing. He is currently working as the Women's National Team Coach and has also been working with the male fighters in their preparations for Rio.

In an interview with the Irish Independent, Walsh revealed that as an Irish coach, his fighters never faced American opposition in 13 years. That's why he is so sure it will happen in Brazil.

"I'd say it'll be like an out of body experience if it happens. And it's f***ing Murphy's Law, isn't it? It's probably on the cards!"

Walsh also said he would find facing fighters he helped bring through the ranks as a difficult experience, having been with the team since the High Performance Unit was created. He has worked with Irish boxers in the past three Olympic Games where the team brought home seven medals including Katie Taylor's gold in 2012.

"I've no doubt it would be daunting going to that ring against my own. I'm an emotional guy at the best of times and I'm always emotional at ringside."

The Wexford native revealed he keeps in regular contact with his successor Zaur Antia and some of the fighters too. If Walsh and Antia do end up in opposite corners in Brazil, he knows there will be no hard-feelings whatever the result.

"He wants to beat me and, if we do draw each other, I'll want to beat him. Win or lose, we'll still be friends."

Both America and Ireland currently have six fighters qualified for the Games, with more expected to come from both countries. Come August, Walsh's nightmare scenario may become a reality.
