Billy Walsh named as boxing's Coach of the Year

Billy Walsh has been named as the AIBA's Coach of the Year for 2016.

The Wexford native won the award on Tuesday night, at the association's end-of-year awards ceremony in Switzerland. He joined Great Britain's Nicola Adams (Women's Boxer of the Year) and Uzbekistan's Hasanboy Dusmatov (Men's Boxer of the Year) as the main winners of the night.

Walsh joined USA Boxing in October 2015 and led the team to three medals in Rio de Janeiro, including a gold for Clarissa Shields. The sliver and bronze medals won in the men's competition was the first time the team won at least two medals since Athens 2004.

The awards ceremony, which also honoured Vladimir Klitschko, Felix Savon, Brahim Asloum and Mary Kom were also honoured at the event for their contributions to amateur boxing.

Earlier on Tuesday, the AIBA also confirmed changes to the calendar for the next Olympic cycle, which will see the Men's and Women's World Championships take place in 2019.

The judging and scoring systems have also been amended, which will now see judges be sitted on all four sides of the ring, during fights.
