Brendan Rodgers backs Christian Benteke for success at Anfield

Brendan Rodgers appeared on Bein Sports last night, alongside Richard Keys and Andy Gray, and revealed that after Jurgen Klopp had been appointed the new manager, the two met up for a discussion.

Rodgers stated that the two sat and spoke in his house after he had just been appointed, as he felt it was important to offer whatever help he could.

"I had an incredible time at Liverpool, a wonderful club, and this was a guy that was coming in from another league [...] a good guy, and whatever help he would have needed going into the job as the manager, I was there for that".

The former Liverpool manager also added that the two spoke about Robert Lewandowski and Christian Benteke, and the similarities between the two.

The future of the much-maligned front man, who hasn't scored in nine games (excluding a penalty against Stoke) for Liverpool, has been the subject of a lot of discussion, given that Klopp has been using him off the bench rather than as a starting striker.

Rodgers backed him for success, however, saying that Lewandowski also started off slowly, and Benteke can be a player in a similar mold: "In this Premier League, he wouldn't have been given the chance that he was given in Germany, in his first season he scored eight goals.

"Can you imagine as a striker coming in to the Premier League and scoring eight goals? But if you give them time, [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang is another player who, now after three years is improving. Christian, I think, over time will show that he's a top class player".
