Britain's Michael Bisping claims UFC middleweight title in major upset

In one of the most shocking results in UFC history, Michael Bisping has defeated the reigning middleweight champion Luke Rockhold in a first round knockout at UFC 199.

Bisping, who was drafted in to replace the injured Chris Weidmean with just over two weeks' notice, became the first Briton to win a UFC title in his first attempt at a title, despite coming into the fight as the overwhelming underdog.

The 37-year-old Briton subdued the reigning champion, with a series of devastating head and body blows, which resulted in the fight being stopped after three minutes.

The win last night represents revenge for Bisping, who was previously defeated by Rockhold by second-round submission in 2014. This brings Rockhold's number of UFC defeats to three.

The pair are said to be longstanding enemies and the fraught relations simmered over again after the fight last night.

Speaking at a post-fight press conference, the Manchester born fighter said:

"Some say revenge is sweet. I disagree – I think it’s better than sweet. Luke, c’mon buddy. When the shoe was on the other foot, I leaned over and thanked you at this moment in time. I said, 'Well done.'"

An enraged Luke Rockhold was clearly unreceptive of Bisping's comments and responded:

"Yeah, and I actually picked you up off the canvas. And you being the d*** you are, came up to me and was a b***h about it."
