Bundesliga rights sell for 85% more than four years ago

Sky Deutschland’s bill for German football broadcast rights will rise by 85% after an auction battle that will deliver a total of €4.6bn for Bundesliga clubs over the next four years.

This compares to the new three-year Premier League deal in the UK covering the next three seasons worth a combined £5.14bn (€6.95bn) paid by Sky and BT.

Sky will pay an average of €876m per season for Saturday and Sunday games, up from €486m under its current contract.

For the first time, Sky will be forced to share coverage of Germany’s top flight after the country’s competition authorities ruled against any further exclusive deals.

Eurosport has bought the rights to Friday night games - but 93% of live German football will be shown on Sky.

Terrestrial stations ARD and ZDF will broadcast highlights and a small number of live matches.

Jeremy Darroch, Sky Deutschland's group chief executive said, "This is an important step to building our business in Germany and maximising the significant opportunity for growth."

While Eurosport's chief executive Peter Hutton said this move is part of a strategy to acquire more "must have" premium live sporting properties.
