CPA "underestimated" fixtures problem

Wednesday marks 100 days since the launch of the Club Players Association.

In that time, the Association has seen its membership numbers grow massively but it failed to gain official recognition from the GAA at Congress in February.

In a statement released to mark the important date in the Association's fledgling history, the CPA admitted its intention remains to "fix the fixtures".

The CPA admitted that they "perhaps underestimated the scale of the problem", and "overestimated the ability of the GAA to get to grips with the real issues".

"There has been no attendant fixtures masterplan on the club game in 32 counties. On that issue as GAA members, we are no further along or any the wiser in terms of an official plan," the CPA continued.

"The problems remain and are being addressed in the usual sticking plaster fashion in individual counties whose volunteers are often ill equipped to deal with the problems they face."

Despite failing to gain official recognition from the GAA at Congress the Association revealed it has "continued to engage very positively with GAA management to work towards addressing this issue, in creating a fixtures plan that is based on sound principles". The two bodies will meet this week.

Over 25,000 members have registered to the Club Players Association in the first 100 days. Over 71% of players surveyed by The CPA said their biggest priority was to see an unchangeable and predictable fixtures calendar introduced for the club player.
