The League Two side battled from start to finish against a side managed by Louis van Gaal, who fielded a team costing more than £100M.
The likes of Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Adnan Januzaj could not find the net, while Robin Van Persie missed a late chance to nick a victory against a resilient unit.
Cambridge will now head to Old Trafford for a lucrative replay.
