Alvarez teased a potential fight with Gennady Golovkin after the win
Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez won the WBO light-middleweight title on Saturday night with a ninth round stoppage of Liverpool's Liam Smith.
The 26-year-old Alvarez won in his 50th professional fight, as he outclassed Smith in front of over 50,000 fans in AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The loss was the first of Smith's career.
Canelo outclassed his opponent throughout the nine rounds, flooring Smith in the seventh, before winning in the ninth with a vicious shot to the body.
After the fight, a potential bout with Gennady Golovkin was teased. “I fear no one, I am the best fighter right now,” Canelo said. “We offered Golovkin the money to fight twice. He didn’t accept.”
Floyd Mayweather is the only fighter to defeat Alvarez in 50 fights. A potential match-up with Golovkin, would be a fight for the generations.
