Carter leads the way as Racing Metro progress to the Champions Cup final

Racing Metro 19

Leicester Tigers 16

Dan Carter shone as Racing Metro secured their place in this season's Champions Cup final, with the Kiwi fly-half kicking 11 points at the City ground in Nottingham.

Leicester Tigers were second best all over the park this afternoon and found themselves on the backfoot in the opening minutes when Joe Rokococo spotted a gap and raced through to give the Parisians excellent field position, from which they scored the opening try of the game, with scrum-half Maxime Machenaud squeezing over the line.

Carter converted and Racing lead by seven with just two minutes gone on the clock, and they went further ahead in the 20th minute when Carter landed his second kick of the day, this time a penalty.

Freddie Burns opened the Tigers scoring soon after before having to withdraw from the game with an injury, but his replacement Owen Williams smashed over a long range penalty to narrow the gap to four.

Racing restored their seven point lead just before the interval with another Carter penalty with the two fly-halves exchanging further penalties after the break, leaving the score at 16-9 in favour of Racing.

Johan Goosen landed a long range penalty to make it a two score game and, realistically, put it out of the Tigers reach with just seven minutes to go.

The travelling French fans were given a fright near the end of the game when Telusa Veainua crossed for a try with just a minute remaining on the clock, but their was to be no late turnaround as Racing progress to the final in Lyon on the 13th of May, where Saracens lie in wait.
