Cerrone-Masvidal ”“ expect a barn burner

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal square off in the co-main event in this weekend’s UFC Fight Night in Denver, Colorado.

The bout sees two inform welterweights slug it out as they both look to climb into title contention later this year.

Since moving up to 170 lbs after his loss to then, lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos, Cerrone has been on a hot streak stopping all four of his opponents at the higher weight class.

In his last bout in December, he stopped the durable Matt Brown in sensational fashion and now has his sights set on welterweight gold.

Speaking to the UFC’s Megan Olivi, Cerrone said: “I’m going to try and get on this March 4th card [where the welterweight title is on the line] right away, let’s go. I’m about to take my 34th UFC walk, tie for the most wins, if I finish I have the most finishes in UFC history. Now everytime I fight, I’m setting new records.”

Asked when he thought he’d fight for the title he said: “Maybe one more fight because I’ve got to go beat one of these Demian Maia/Robbie Lawlor guys because I want to fight on March 4th.”

For his part, the always exciting Masvidal is coming off wins over Ross Pearson and Jake Ellenberger and a win over Cerrone would catapult him up the rankings. The pair have 63 professional wins between them and don’t like going to the judges. Expect fireworks.

In the main event, top women's bantamweight contenders Valentina Shevchenko faces off against Juilianna Pena which will probably decide the next challenger to title holder Amanda Nunes.
