Chad Mendes handed two-year ban for doping violation

Chad Mendes has been handed a two-year suspension for a testing positive for a banned substance.

Mendes becomes the latest fighter to fall foul of the UFC's crackdown on dopers and USADA [United States Anti-Doping Agency] announced last month that Mendes had been flagged for "a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection".

This afternoon USADA released a full statement, indicating that Mendes had in fact tested positive for GHRP-6, a human growth hormone.

The statement reads: "Mendes, 31, tested positive for GHRP-6 (Growth Hormone-Releasing Hexapeptide) following an out-of-competition urine test conducted on May 17, 2016. GHRP-6 is a prohibited substance in the class of Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors, Related Substances and Mimetics under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.

"Growth Hormone-Releasing Peptides are listed as Non-Specified Substances on the WADA Prohibited List. Under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, the standard sanction for an anti-doping policy violation involving a Non-Specified Substance is a two-year period of ineligibility."

The ban has been given a start date of June 10, so Mendes will be able to return in 2018. You can read the full statement from USADA.

Mendes was beaten by Conor McGregor in an interim featherweight title last July and was most recently beaten by Frankie Edgar.
