Ched Evans re-signs for Sheffield United

Chesterfield striker Ched Evans has re-signed for Sheffield United on a three-year contract.

Evans signed for the club in 2009 but was released from his contract after he was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman in 2012. He was sentenced to five years in prison for the offence.

The former Wales international served only two-and-a-half years of the sentence and had his conviction quashed. Following a retrial in October 2016, he was found not guilty.

"I am delighted to be back," Evans told the club's official website. "I still feel I have plenty to prove in football both at club and international level and I believe I can achieve those goals at United, playing in front of the terrific fans whose support I have always appreciated."

There have been a number of outspoken figures who have previously urged against the club re-signing Evans.

British Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill wanted her name removed from a stand at Sheffield United's home ground, Bramall Lane, if Evans was offered another contract after his retrial.

"The signing is just one element of the plans we have drawn-up for next season," said Blades manager Chris Wilder.

"We have done our homework on the player. We pride ourselves on team spirit - as the fans have seen this season - and plan to bring in players who can be part of that.

"Ched comes to us with targets to achieve along the way. With a full pre-season with us we believe he can provide us with options up front and score goals."

The 28-year-old has scored 48 goals in 113 games for Sheffield United. In his final season at Bramall Lane, he scored 35 goals.

Since joining Chesterfield last year, he scored seven times in 29 appearances for the relegated League One club.
