Chelsea beat Southampton to take another step towards title

Chelsea have moved a step closer to the Premier League title after a 4-2 home win over Southampton.

The Blues move seven points clear of Tottenham, although Spurs have a game in hand to come against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday in which they could close the gap back down to four points.

Eden Hazard, whose perceived lack of selfishness in front of goal was a pre-match talking point, gave Chelsea the lead after just five of minutes of action with a low shot.

But Oriol Romeu, who was also in the news after his manager suggested he was not far off the level of Chelsea's N'Golo Kante, levelled for Southampton 20 minutes later with a tap in.

But Gary Cahill restored Chelsea's lead just before half time from a corner.

Diego Costa made it 3-1 eight minutes after half time, before the Brazil born Spain international scored his second of the night with a decisive strike.

Departing club captain John Terry also made a late cameo five minutes from time with the result in the bag.

Southampton did score a consolation deep into stoppage time when ex-Chelsea left back Ryan Bertrand headed in.

But Chelsea are now a few steps from a league and FA Cup double which they will look to seal over the next few weeks.
