Chelsea suffer sizeable financial loss despite winning last season's Premier League

Chelsea made a loss of £23.1M last season despite winning the Premier League and League Cup.

However, the reigning English champions say the deficit keeps them within UEFA's Financial Fair Play limits.

One of the factors has been put down to Chelsea's last-16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, having reached the semi-finals the previous year.

"The group turnover figure of £314.3m was marginally down on last year’s all-time record of £319.8m. Revenues fell slightly short of that amount due to the team’s relative UEFA Champions League performance (semi-final in 2013/14 compared with round of 16 in 2014/15). The latest turnover remains by some distance the second best in the club’s history. In 2013, turnover was £255.8 million which itself was an increase for a fourth consecutive year," the club commented on their official website.

The club expects a new shirt sponsorship deal to contribute to more positive results next time around.

But a poor start to this season leaves them in real danger of not making into next season's Champions League and the financial boost that would entail.

The Blues, who have qualified for at least the group stages of Europe's premier club competition since 2003-04, are 15th in the Premier League and already 12 points off fourth place.
