Chris Froome on his way to making history as third Tour de France victory looms

Chris Froome is on the cusp of an historic Tour de France win which would make him the first British person to capture the title three times.

With the final stage in Paris almost over, Froome's lead has extended to over four minutes after navigating his way through the final descent on the slippery roads.

And although stage 20 was claimed by the Spanish rider Jon Izaguirre, the overall gap between Froome and the chasing pack will not be curtailed as the riders approach the suburbs of Paris at the time of publishing.

Froome conceded yesterday:

"I still need to get the yellow jersey to Paris tomorrow but certainly the racing side is done and dusted. It's an amazing feeling of relief, just coming over the last line today. Thank you to all my team-mates, they've really been there for me every step of the way and I couldn't ask for more."

When Froome finally crosses the line, he will join the other seven riders to win three tour titles including legendary five-time winners Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain.
