Chuck Blazer and Jack Warner among those being sued by FIFA for "tens of millions of dollars"

FIFA have filed papers with American authorities hoping to reclaim "tens of millions of dollars" from former FIFA officials including Chuck Blazer and Jack Warner.

The organisation is claiming damages against "41 former FIFA officials and other football organisations". FIFA claim that the money was diverted from football projects "illegally through bribery, kickbacks and corrupt schemes carried out by the defendants."

Gianni Infantino, FIFA's new president revealed in a statement, the reasons for hoping to reclaim the money. "The convicted defendants abused the positions of trust they held at FIFA and other international football organisations and caused serious and lasting damage to FIFA, its member associations and the football community. The monies they pocketed belonged to global football and were meant for the development and promotion of the game."

Blazer, Warner and suspended CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb are three men specifically named by FIFA in the case. Blazer and Warner have already been banned from football for life, while Webb lost his position on FIFA's Executive Committee and also his CONCACAF presidency.

Among the claims made by FIFA are that bribes were paid by Morocco as they were bidding to host the 1998 World Cup, and the voting  for the 2010 tournament host was also compromised.
