Congealed paints causes the cancellation of the NFL's traditional pre-season kick-off

The start of the NFL pre-season was cancelled on Sunday night, as congealed paint caused unplayable conditions in the game between the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts.

Both teams were to compete in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. The game is seen as the traditional start to the pre-season and has been played annually since 1962, with the exception of the 2011 game, when the NFL was in lockout.

"I was notified at about 5:30 that there was a problem at midfield and in the end zones with some of the painting that it was kind of congealing and rubberised, which meant players might slip on it," Pro Football Hall of Fame president David Baker told the NFL Media.

"We think we could make it playable, that it might be playable now but if there is any concern, anything in the minds of players we want to err on the side of player safety."

Fans were already in the stadium, and the players had already completed their warm-ups when the decision was made. Full refunds will be given to all fans who attended the game.

The NFL pre-season now begins on Thursday, when six games take place, including the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos playing the Chicago Bears.
