"We can't wait to get out and have a crack at the top of the table" - Pat Lam wary of Ulster's strength in depth

Pat Lam admit he is wary of the strength in depth that Ulster boast ahead of this weekend's inter-provincial clash with Ulster at the Sportsground.

Connacht have gotten off to a poor start this season, picking up one win and accruing four defeat from their opening five games, the latest of which came against Scarlets.

A win against neighbours Ulster would certainly put them on the right foot heading into their inaugural Champions Cup game next weekend.

Les Kiss' side, meanwhile, have been in scintillating form and have picked up five wins from their opening five games of the season.

"Getting the win is the confidence but I think the best part is the performance is getting better, but then also when we review the performance there are some massive errors we can improve on," Lam told Off The Ball's Dave McIntyre. "We're going to have improve an Ulster side that are flying.

"They're the only undefeated team and obviously [showing] their quality as well as playing really good rugby. We couldn't have asked for a bigger game really to have come to the Sportsground and it's good prep for the following week as well.

"This is where we want to be, we've always said we want to be playing all the big games. We're excited by it."

Kiss has done a fantastic job with the Irish province so far this season and look to maintain their winning run when they visit Galway this weekend. The quality in the squad is something Lam is wary of.

"I brought Charles [Piutau] through from club rugby to Blues Super Rugby, [he's] a quality player. When I saw he signed I thought fantastic. He's made a big difference to them.  We know they've got all the other internationals [Ruan] Pineaar, [Paddy] Jackson and they're key players for them.

"Les [Kiss] has done a good job and we all know the quality of coach that he is. Certainly the amount of individuals and internationals that they have... When you look at Ulster's squad and you look at who's not playing, that shows you just how impressive a squad they have.

"It allows rotation and competition. Certainly this week we had the bad news of Denis Buckely, Tom McCartney and Matt Healy, the're all front liners for us. They could all be out for a significant amount of time.

"We've always said the next guy steps up, but it just takes a hit when you play squads like that. All-in-all we're excited by it. We can't wait to get out and have a crack at the top of the table."
