Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have ended months of speculation about a potential super fight by finally announcing that their boxing match will go ahead on August 26th.

The bout will take place in Las Vegas.

Speculation had mounted on Wednesday afternoon after it was revealed that Mayweather's promotion company had a request for a boxing event set for August 26th approved by the Nevade State Athletics Commission, with rumours linking that with a potential fight against McGregor.

On Wednesday night, UFC lightweight champion and ex-featherweight belt holder McGregor and unbeaten former multiple boxing title champion Mayweather announced the fight on social media.

Forty year old Mayweather has a 49-0 unbeaten record in the boxing ranks which makes him the overwhelming favourite against a McGregor (28) whose prowess as an MMA fighter has been proven but with the Dubliner essentially being a novice when it comes to elite boxing.

But both fighters stand to earn vast sums from what is expected to be one of the most lucrative boxing bouts in history.
