Conor McGregor targets lightweight strap as UFC 205 card takes shape

Conor McGregor is continuing to hold out for a chance to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two belts in different weight classes concurrently.

The 28-year-old has spoken time and again of his desire to fight for the lightweight title and currently is champion of the featherweight division.

Respected MMA jounralist Ariel Helwani reports that the Irishman is fit and ready to fight after returning to training. He was said to have been nursing a leg injury after UFC 202 where he defeated Nate Diaz via majority decision.

This is not the first time this year negotiations have gone public between UFC president Dana White and McGregor. The featherweight champion lost his main event slot at UFC 200 in July after failing to fulfill his media obligations and there was what appeared to be a public falling out between the two.

The historic card, which takes place at Madison Square Garden on November 12, has slowly come together and received a boost last night with the addition of five fights.

Featherweight Frankie Edgar will go face-to-face with Jeremy Stephens, while Donald Cerrone has found a replacement for Robbie Lawler as he takes on Kelvin Gastelum in a welterweight bout.

Former 205lbs champion Rashad Evans will take on Tim Kennedy and in the women's strawweight division, Liz Carmouche marks her return to action in over a year and a half as she fights Katlyn Chookagian.

Tim Boetsch and Rafael Natal meet in the night's other middleweight clash.

There is no further movement yet as to the status of lightweight Eddie Alvarez, who fancies a bout with McGregor and took to Twitter to say as much.

However, he is being lined up for a bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov for later in the year. A possible date for this would be at UFC 206 in  Toronto on December 10.
