Contrasting fortunes for Irvine and O'Neill in Olympic qualifying

They were in quarter-final action today

Brendan Irvine has joined Katie Taylor and David Oliver Joyce in the semi-finals of this week's European Olympic Qualifiers in Turkey.

But Ireland team captain Darren O'Neill has been eliminated.

He lost by split decision against Abdulkadir Abdullayev of Azerbaijan in his heavyweight quarter-final.

Meanwhile, Irvine won his last-eight encounter this evening, beating Elie Konki of France in the flyweight division.

Earlier, Joyce and Taylor also won their quarter-finals earlier today with all three fighters now just one victory away from securing Olympic qualification.

However, there was was disappointment for Ceire Smith and Christina Desmond, who both lost their quarter finals.
