Could it be? Manchester United apparently plotting a bid for Lionel Messi

After more or less securing the John Hancock of PSG's Zlatan Ibrahimovic, it seems Jose Mourinho is advancing his plans for greatness at Old Trafford, by pursuing Lionel Messi.

In a move that would obliterate the £85.3m spent on bringing Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, the recruitment of the Barcelona star, would exponentially increase United's chances of reclaiming the Premier League title for the first time since 2013.

Manchester United, will return to the Europa League next season after failing to clinch a Champions League qualification spot last month. This could prove to be problematic for Messi who is more accustomed to contesting for Champions League honours.

And reports suggest that any move is likely to be postponed until 2017 when United will be aiming to be back in that tournament again.

Messi's current deal at the Nou Camp is set to expire in 2018 and it has emerged that he will require certain guarantees if he is to remain at Barcelona, where he has scored 453 goals in 531 games.

The Manchester club have apparently made two approaches to Messi's camp in the past three weeks and Mourinho is aiming to attract some other major signings to Old Trafford. In addition to Zlatan Ibrahimovic's impending arrival at Old Trafford, Paul Pogba is also being heavily linked with the Premier League club.
