Coutinho to miss a number of key games for Liverpool

Philippe Coutinho is likely to be out for the next month.

The Liverpool attacking midfielder sustained a hamstring problem during Tuesday night's Capital Cup One win at Stoke.

His absence comes during a key run of fixtures for the Reds as they look to secure a place in the Capital One Cup final and try to bridge the gap to the Premier League Top Four.

After tomorrow's FA Cup third round tie against Exeter, the rest of January sees Liverpool welcome Arsenal and Manchester United to Anfield in the league, while their Capital One Cup semi return at home to Stoke is on the 26th of the month.

That fixture is just three days after an away trip to Norwich.

Coutinho is just one name on a long injury list for Liverpool. Defender Dejan Lovren is expected to be out for about 10 days with a hamstring injury.

Fellow centre-back Kolo Toure will sit out the game against Exeter, but should be back to face Arsenal next week.

Last night on Off The Ball, renowned fitness coach Raymond Verheijen told us that manager Jurgen Klopp erred by introducing a more demanding playing style at a particularly busy period of the season, when the effect of a new coach already leads to an increase in injuries.

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce made a broadly similar claim, which Klopp has laughed off.
