Coutinho transfer rumours add to a bad weekend for Liverpool

Former Chelsea player David Luiz believes his Brazilian teammate Phillippe Coutinho may plan a move from Premier League football if Liverpool fail to reach the Champions League this season.

Coutinho elected to remain with Liverpool this year despite their disappointing sixth place finish last season. And Luiz fears that Coutinho's patience could be getting fragmented.

"Coutinho made the choice to stay at Liverpool without Champions League football this season. I don't think he will make that choice again" he says.

"The best need to be playing with the best. Coutinho is the best midfield player in England right now. That is great for him, but when you play at that level the big clubs will notice you. If Liverpool don’t qualify this season for the Champions League, I am sure he will be the most in demand player in Europe next summer".

Couthinho's comments however, contradict Luiz's sentiments. Barcelona's Neymar da Silva Santos has already praised Coutinho and has recommended a move to his club after it was reported that the Catalans were hoping to poach him from Anfield.

But peaking to The Daily Star, Coutinho tempered the rumours and pledged his loyalty to Liverpool.

"I heard what Neymar said on the internet but I want to do well with Liverpool. I am happy here and I hope this season will go well for us. Of course it is a nice thing he [Neymar] said. Everyone knows he's my friend. But I'm here and focused on Liverpool to help them do good things on the pitch".

However, with the news that Brendan Rodgers was sacked in the wake of their draw with Everton, things may be very different if Coutinho were to be asked the same question again.

The club state the process to find a replacement is underway already, and the names of Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti have been heavily linked with the job, meaning there could be plenty of changes over the next few months at Anfield.
