Cristiano Ronaldo double helps Real Madrid to twelfth European Cup

Real Madrid have become the first side in the history of the Champions League to retain the trophy.

Zinedine Zidane's side scored three second-half goals to defeat Juventus 4-1 in a one-sided Final in Cardiff. They are the first side to retain the European Cup since AC Milan did so in 1990.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the first-half. The Portuguese striker scored 20 minutes into the game, when his shot from the edge of the box took a slight deflection to beat Gianluigi Buffon.

Juventus started the game better than their opponents and deservedly equalised before the half-hour mark. Mario Mandzukic scored one of the best goals in the history of European Cup Finals, with an overhead kick that looped over Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Two goals in the space of three second-half minutes was to prove crucial in Real's winning of their twelfth European Cup. Defender Casemiro scored the winning goal on the hour mark. His shot deflected off Sami Khedira, before looping over Buffon into the net.

Three minutes later, Ronaldo scored his second goal and the 600th of his career, beating Buffon at the near post from a Luka Modric cross. The Portuguese striker's goals meant he has scored goals in FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup finals in Cardiff.

Substitute Marco Asensio scored the fourth goal for Real in added time, as ten-man Juventus chased two goals in a bid to equalise. The Italians ended the game with ten men as Juan Cuadrado was sent off in the final five minutes for a second yellow card.

The win caps Real Madrid's time as one of the best sides in the history of the tournament with three wins in the last four years.
